Background:
Alex(andra) Eames grew up in an Irish family, with a brother and sister that the series mentions. Her father is still alive, living in a New York neighborhood. She joined the NYPD in the footsteps of her father. She’s a career NYPD member, entering the police academy around 1993. Not much is known about where she worked within the NYPD, but she was with Vice for five years before joining major case. Also, in a scene where she’s wearing her uniform, she’s shown with a 25 year service bar.
She was married to Joseph Dutton, another cop, who was killed in the line of duty in 1998. At the time of his killing, the wrong person was convicted of the case, and in 2007, the case is reopened by Goren and Eames and the correct killer was arrested. She has no children of her own, although she was a surrogate for her sister.
In Criminal Intent, she’s the senior detective in her partnership with Robert Goren, along with working with Detectives Wheeler and Nichols. They end up being partners for ten years. (This was from the beginning of the series, possibly before, until the show ended.) During this time, they solve many cases, including one where Eames was kidnapped by the daughter of Goren’s mentor, who had started killing women in the same manner of Sebastian, a serial killer. Eames manages to escape after Declan Gage asks for his daughter, Jo, to be brought to the station for ‘safety’, and Alex uses that as a chance to escape the prison she’s in.
Alex is very close to her partner, Robert Goren, they were never romantically involved, but they are loyal to one another. Alex keeps in communication with him when he goes undercover in a prison (which was unauthorized by the NYPD). She gets angry when he goes undercover while on suspension and she shows up to the scene, pointing a gun at him ready to shoot.
This loyalty temporarily ends her employment with the NYPD, because she is offered a promotion to Captain after Captain Ross is killed while working with the FBI. There is a condition that she has to fire her partner in order to have the position. They end up talking about it and Goren decided to resign because he was sure he was going to get fired after some of his recent stunts. She ends up resigning shortly after. It’s not explained how they ended up back at Major Case, but they return a year later, where Alex works for an undetermined period (and the series ends without a decent ending, unfortunately.)
Personality:
Alex is a tough cookie. The phrase ‘though she be but little, she be fierce’ describes her pretty well. She’s incredibly loyal to her partner, her captain, and her family. She’s kind and gentle with children, and tough and a hardliner with suspects and people who don’t cooperate with her and the police. Alex knows when to pull out the kid gloves and also when she needs to be tough as nails to get the information she needs.
She’s also quite sarcastic, able to snark about almost anything. “Can they print a hand gesture?” and “You should see me in a blue dress.” (After being called a devil.) She seems to be able to pull a quip out of nowhere, on any subject, even if her partner brings up some obscure fact. She doesn’t take shit from anyone, even if it’s from her partner or captain.
Due to her looks and petiteness, she’s sometimes the ‘nice cop’ to Goren’s ‘bad cop’ when interviewing suspects. She’s also not afraid to use her femininity in interviews or undercover. See her time in vice, when it’s mentioned in CI that she went undercover to catch johns. Her determination with this and her smarts, she’s made senior detective, (and in the future of the series, after I’m pulling her) becomes a lieutenant. And after working with Goren for so long, she’s picked up some of his quirks, including the ‘Goren Lean’ when interviewing subjects.
Abilities: Police training including crime scenes, gun training, interviewing skills, etc. Also, queen of snark.
Items Upon Arrival: Police issued side arm, badge, and keys to the vehicle she'd been driving.
Cash Upon Arrival: About $200 in denominations of 20 or smaller, because that's what credit cards are for, lullz.
